Writing : The Exerda Universe

The Exerda Universe

Although I had written a fair amount of various genres growing up and going through school, it wasn't really until my work with the Exerda Universe that I truly started to write.

In fifth grade, my friend Michael Brown and I drew pictures of spaceships in a contest of one-upsmanship, with my design eventually leading to a vessel I named the Exerda. Having always been a science fiction fan and with the added creative influence of the V miniseries and ensuing series, over the next couple of years I drew comic books (sadly since lost) detailing the adventures of the starship Exerda and her crew (mainly myself and friends). A strange cross between Star Trek and V, my comics led by the seventh grade to a poorly done yet critically important work: my first Exerda story, written in longhand.

From there my writing steadily improved over the years as I continued to develop the world and even universe around my starship Exerda. Although I have since moved primarily into other genres and settings, the Exerda Universe remains that critical seed that began my writing career.

About the Exerda Universe

The Exerda Universe represents my first experience with the kind of world (in this case, universe) creation that is so intrinsic to writing science fiction and fantasy. From laying out the basic characters (at the time based upon me and my friends from our childhood games of "Space") to technical diagrams of the Exerda and her sister vessels to descriptions of military and government to the rules of technology to a detailed timeline, I fleshed out the Exerda Universe from top to bottom.
