John's Anime Pages
In Japan, cartoons are not considered a medium just for children. In fact, feature-length animations with multi-million dollar (multi-billion yen, if you please) budgets are commonplace, and the subject matter ranges from children's flicks just like in America to very adult pieces that can and do garner NC-17 ratings or their equivalent. In anime, as Japanese animation is called, there's a wonderful sense of the Japanese culture, and all anime has a definitive style that sets it apart from all other animation in the world.
Years ago, few Americans knew anything about Japanese animation; Speed Racer was likely the extent of the anime Joe Q. Public could name (and then only with the term "anime" defined for him). Fast foward to the 80's and the beginnings of the modern day anime-in-America movement; you could add "Akira" and perhaps "Voltron" or "Battle of the Planets" to the list.
Today literally thousands of titles are available in America, many of them in original Japanese unedited and with fairly good translations as subtitles.
